Bees being bees…

The past few days I’ve been helping my son with his deck building project. It’s been hard, but good work.

Deck project

Here, at home, Linda and I have been working in the various flower gardens mainly to water and then the next day to pull the weeds that grew because of the watering. It always amazes me when I think about the circularity of everything that surrounds us.

The bees for all appearances are doing well. We are still feeding them sugar water. Originally, the plan was to feed for the first week and then let them forage for the nectar they need. But after talking with a few seasoned beekeepers in the area because of the abnormally dry weather we may have to continue to feed for a bit longer.

This afternoon, after completing some electrical repairs in the barn, I walked down to the apiary to see what was going on. I saw evidence of pollen foraging going on — you can tell by the color of the back legs. That is where the pollen basket is located.

I saw a lot of bees carrying back yellow pollen.

I also think I saw some orientation flights occurring. I mentioned this when the bees were brought to the hive, but then ones today would be bees that were recently born. Another sign of a colony doing well.

I tried to get some pictures, but they came out pretty bad. The ones below are the best of the bad.

Too dark see much of anything.

I did get a decent video.
