The Barn and Networking…

The barn is a structure that was here when we bought the property. It quickly became one of our favorite places. The previous owner used it for a pony barn. We started using it as a place to store gardening tools.

The barn had water but no electricity. We ran a power line to it as quickly feasible. With the addition of lights, it became very functional. The next major modification was the addition of a lean-to greenhouse. We have no idea how many plants were started in it.

In the background of the picture below, is the only picture I could find of the structure in all the years we lived here.

Overtime, the barn fell into disrepair. The roof needed replacement. The greenhouse needed to be redone. Some people working on the house cut both the power and the water. The overall result is a considerable amount of termite damage. It was and is a mess.

Since that time, power has been restored and some interior work has been completed. There is still a long ways to go until it is fully functional.

When we started making different items for the apiary, we quickly ran out of storage room in both the basement and the garage. This little dilemma put the barn issues back into focus.

So far we have added this type of shelving courtesy of our daughter.

Very useful to store the tools and supplies used the most.

With the expansion plans for next year different types of storage and shelving options will be needed.

A major upgrade that has almost been completed is getting a network connection to the barn. This will be needed so use some network cameras and well as improve the WiFi in this part of the property.

A direct wired connection was not a viable option due to the length of the wire run and the cost of digging a trench for the wire. A different approach needed to be researched out.

After a lot of trial and error, we settled on this device:

These needed these to actually mount the radios on:

Now that we had data, it time to work on WiFi. The choice for this device was really easy to make. Ubiquiti makes great WiFi expansion products. We bought one for the house and one for the barn area.

We also needed a couple more antenna mounts. This time we bought these:

The end result is both excellent data transfer and WiFi.
