While this bee season is by no means over, I thought it would be a good idea to start planning for next year. I hope to expand to a total of 6 hives and 8 swarm boxes from the current 3 and 4 respectively. So this means I’ll need:
- at least 60 new frames, probably closer to 80 meaning:
- 60 to 80 new tops and bottoms
- 120 to 160 side pieces
- to clear out the foliage where the new hives will be
- and build 3 more stands
Looks like it will be a busy fall.
I did start cutting out blanks for the frames last week. I ended up with about 20 tops and bottoms and about 50 side pieces. I think that is a pretty good start.
New Sign Backstop!
For Christmas last year the family gave us a beautiful metal sign that we have hung at the apiary all season. It was a little hard to see, so I was trying to find a piece of wood to attach it to. I was looking to hard because the answer was literally under foot.
A friend had given me some very rough butcher block that had been used as the top of a toolbox. A few years ago I had planned it down to about 3/4″ to get rid of the damage from the tool box. I then used a lot of it to make cutting boards for the family. But there was some left and it was perfect for the backstop.
