Setting up the apiary…

Decision, decisions

I walked back in the woods just beyond the clearing I had previously chosen and found a location that would have good morning sun and partial shade in the afternoon. The catch is that it was in pretty rough shape. But it was nothing a chain saw couldn’t fix.

It took two full days a cutting and dragging out the debris for the apiary to start to come together. I was especially concerned with a number of dead trees in the area that could cause a problem later on. We recruited our Grandson to help with the clearing. Unfortunately, I don’t have a picture.

After the brush was cleared away, we raked out a path and put the stands in place.

Of course, the stands were moved at least a dozen times before a consensus could be made.

Moving the hives

This turned into a lot of work. First, the hive box had to be brought down. They aren’t really designed to be moved much because of their weight. Then the tops were carried down. Then the tops had to be positioned correctly so the hinges could be screwed down.

I think it turned out just right.
