Surprise, Surprise, Surprise…

The surprise today isn’t nearly as colossal as the one on December 7, 1941, at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii but, it was nevertheless a surprise to us today.

With the temperatures in the 60’s, we decided to walk the property and see what was going on. The flowerbeds looked their normal shagginess and the trees were really bare without their leaves.

The koi pond looked good with the Danner AP-40 air pump running keeping the water stirred up and looking good. We saw a few fish looking for something to eat. It’s always good to see any fish this tome of year.

Then we got back to the apiary. We had shut the one remaining hive up a few weeks ago and really hadn’t seen any real bee activity for several weeks. I was beginning to think they had either absconded like the other hives did, or were dead.

What we saw was some really crazy bee activity. The picture below doesn’t really do it justice.

It looked like the bees were doing orientation flights the way they were moving up and down the hive. But, there shouldn’t be any brood hatching this late according to what I think I know.

Linda took the video below.

So, while not as important as what happened at Pearl Harbor, or as funny as Gomer Pyle in Mayberry, this was still a great surprise for us.
