This spring, Linda and I started a flower garden in the area where a scraggly group of cedar trees had been. We named it the Cedar Grove Garden.
It has seen a lot this year. First, a long stretch of spring like temperatures with an okay amount of rain. Then, July came with three weeks of 100+ degree days. And then, in August we received the rainfall we didn’t get in May and June.
What this meant was that after a pretty good start, we thought everything had burned up but the Black-eyed Susans that were over 5 foot tall. So we thought that this year was a flop and that we try again next year.
We paid little attention to the garden through most of August. Then we ventured out to take a look and found out that it has been taken over by grass and other miscellaneous plants. Upon further inspection, we found many – not all – but many of the flowers we planted had come back to life.

Linda tugged on a piece of grass and found that it was pretty easy to pull. So, we decided to take back the garden.
This time we were going to fertilize the garden with some good compost and then do a top cover of mulch. Well, we did not have any, so off to Lowe’s we go.
The initial purchase was 6 bags of mulch and 5 bags of compost.
Note: when you buy mulch at the end of the season, you have to remember that it has been out in the elements since at least March and was exposed to all types of weather. In other words, it will likely stink.
Day 1
Linda got a two morning head start on the weeding and it looked really good. I brought down the mulch and compost and started working the compost in and then covering the area with mulch.
After day 1:

We were running low on mulch so another trip to Lowe’s was needed. Picked up 6 more bags of funky smelling mulch.
Note: the smell is due to leaf mold and is really a good thing.
After Lowe’s, we went to Shirk’s Country Market and purchased 6 more cornflowers.
Day 2
The next day we were back at it.

Day 3
We were determined to finish today. We did, but we were worn out. I think the end product looks pretty good.
